What You'll Do
You'll own the performance, culture, and direction of the Personal Lines Underwriting team. Your day-to-day will include:
- Lead and develop a high-performing underwriting team — coaching, evaluating, and creating development plans that help each person grow.
- Design and implement underwriting guidelines that balance profitable growth with sound risk selection and strong retention.
- Conduct quality audits and turn findings into targeted training that sharpens your team's skills and consistency.
- Partner with sales leadership to drive procedural alignment, agency relationships, and strategic growth goals.
- Champion technology-enabled underwriting solutions to boost efficiency and keep the team ahead of the curve.
- Analyze product forms, rates, and underwriting rules — recommending enhancements that strengthen our competitive positioning.
- Oversee the agent/agency visitation program with a strategic eye on new and underperforming partners.
- Stay informed on emerging industry trends and proactively surface recommendations that support business strategy.
- Communicate underwriting procedures and updates to staff and agents with clarity and purpose.
- Manage all personnel functions: hiring, coaching, performance evaluations, and employee relations in partnership with HR.
What We're Looking For
Required
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
- 5–7 years of underwriting experience
- Proven leadership and people management capabilities
- Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and negotiation skills
- Working knowledge of insurance laws, regulations, and industry standards
- Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Effective presentation, facilitation, and communication skills
- Ability to identify and implement workflow and process improvements
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and comfort with online research tools
Preferred
- 3–5 years of management or supervisory experience
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and insurance-related coursework
- Industry designations such as CPCU, CIC, API, AIS, AU, or similar credentials
